Band recognised by Council

Members of the Band were delighted to attend a recent meeting of East Renfrewshire Council to receive a presentation to recognise their recent success, both at the National Finals 2006 and the Scottish Band of the Year 2nd Section 2006.

Iain and Rachel MacDonald and Sarah Crangle met with Provost Betty Cunningham and Councillor Jim Fletcher, along with other Council officials in December to accept the plaque on behalf of the Band.

Celebrate Christmas with the Barrhead Burgh Band

Thursday 14th December, join with the band in a festive concert in
Auchenback Primary School, Barrhead.

Doors open
7.00pm for 7.30pm. Tickets priced at £3 (£2conc) available on the night.

Welcome and farewell to members

A formal, and perhaps overdue, 'hello' to new players, Peter Ferguson on horn, Cameron Laird on cornet and Eilidh Houston on Euphonium. All are most welcome in the band, Peter having joined in the summer, and Cameron and Eilidh in the past few weeks.

At the same time, the Band wish
Lynsey McConnell, Jordan Dixon and Fraser Ramsay a farewell as they move on to new challenges respectively.


Change of committee at Barrhead

Following a recent AGM, the Band are pleased to appoint Iain MacDonald as Secretary, and main point of contact for the Band.

Sarah Crangle assumes role of Chair after 5 years in the Band Manager/ Secretary role, along with Tom Allan on Vice Chair.

Barrhead Band of the Year

The first of November saw the move of Barrhead Band to the first section, and once again saw Barrhead Burgh Band being awarded Band of the Year - 2nd Section 2006.

The Band are delighted to once again receive this award having achieved it previously in 2004, and achieving Band of the Year in 1995.

Baby Boom in Barrhead

Congratulations to 2nd Horn Louise Carrigan on the birth of her new baby girl, and to Band Chair Tom Allan on his new granddaughter!

And congratulations to Rebecca & Bruce Ritchie, solo horn and Eb Bass, on the birth of their baby boy!

Both mothers and both babies are doing well, and the Band wish them a speedy return to fill the horn section!!!

Welcome to new members

Barrhead welcome new member Dan Atkins, joining the trombone section after many years playing in South of the Border.

Dan is joined in the trombone section by former Barrhead member, Ray Collins, and the Bass section is boosted by the return of Angus Dunsmore on Bb Bass.

New resident at Barrhead

The Band are delighted to have appointed Martyn Ramsay as resident conductor in Barrhead.

Martyn, a former member of Barrhead and now flugel with Kirkintilloch Band, will work alongside Chris in preparing the band for their performance at the National finals.

A huge welcome to Martyn, as the Band look forward to a succesful partnership.

Girls run for Band funds

Four members of the band ran 10k closer to Harrogate by taking part in the ladies race in Glasgow on Sunday.

Eileen Anderson (flugel), Rachel MacDonald & Sarah Crangle, (both cornets) and local supporter Carole Ann Alford bravely took part in the run and succesfully raised over £1200 in sponsorship towards Band funds.

Win at FBBF (Carnegie)

Barrhead continue to enjoy success with a recent win in Dunfermline.

Claiming the second section trophy, the Band are now looking forward to enjoying further success in the lead up to the National finals.

Band headed for Harrogate

Barrhead Burgh are celebrating after a win at the Scottish Championships secured them a place at the National finals in Harrogate on 23rd September The Band are delighted to be awarded 2nd place in the Second section in Motherwell on 11th March, which sees a welcome return to the First Section in November.

A busy schedule of fundraising events is planned for the coming months to enable all of the Band to participate in representing Barrhead and Scotland at the Nationals. Further details of these will be available on the website soon.

Band prepare for Scottish Championships

As the Scottish Championships approach, the Band are busy putting the final touches to the 2nd Section testpiece, Snell's 'Images of the Millenium'

March 11th in Motherwell will see the band perform with many new faces throughout, and all are looking forward to the day

A welcome back to the band is extended to Michael Connor on Principal, Stephen Allan on Bass Trombone, Bruce Ritchie on Eb Bass, with Stephanie Coyle being a terrific addition to the percussion section

The second section commences at 10am on Saturday 11th Mrch in Motherwell Civic Centre

Trophy win for band at Borders

Barrhead Burgh with MD Chris Bradley celebrated winning three trophies at the Scottish Borders contest in Jedburgh.

Best bass section was awarded to Ann McGuinness, Sheena Glass, Angus Dunsmore & Murray White.

 The Band also took best 2nd section prize and best overall band, with a clear six point lead over the other eight band competing on the day.

New players at Barrhead

The Band extend a welcome to new players, Rebecca Ritchie, joining the band on Solo Horn, and David Reid on Euphonium...

...and say goodbye to Elaine Cusick, who moves to Kirkintilloch on 2nd Horn after 12 years with Barrhead. And Jane Ann Cameron who joins the Euph-Bari section of Newmilns. Both have been integral and much valued members of the Band, and we hope to see them continuing to be an informal part of the Band in the future.

Band Win at
Brass in the Park

The band celebrated at the weekend after being awarded 3rd Place at Brass in the Park 2005.

The result was a great end to an enjoyable and well organised day in Newtongrange.

Adjudicator, Allan Ramsay commented 'A well chosen and well rehearsed programme with lots to commend and relatively little to detract'.

Conducted by MD Chris Bradley, Barrhead's Elaine Cusick gave a stunning solo performance in 'Over the Rainbow' in a
program which also featured 'Ellacombe' and 'Viva Birkenshaw'.

Open Rehearsal

Barrhead Burgh Band recently held an Open Rehearsal to encourage members of the public to find out more about brass banding as part of Brass Band Week 2005.

Band members were on hand to talk to interested youngsters, and tell them a bit more about the band. Lauren and Alycia, who has only been playing for a few months, both did a fantastic job when they joined in with the band practice.

Band manager Sarah Crangle says, ‘We are hoping to rebuild our development section, and welcome enquiries from anyone with an interest in learning to play a brass instrument. We will provide free tuition, and can provide an instrument – all we need from you is the time and commitment!’.

Comings and goings

The band say goodbye to Alan Taggart (Principal Cornet), Lorna Chalmers (Euphonium) and Andy Clark (Bass Trombone)

The band would like to thank them for their support, and wish them well in their respective futures

A warm welcome is extended to Andrew Burrows who takes the Bass Trombone seat,  Denise Robinson
& Eileen Anderson, who join the front row and Jordan Dixon on Euphonium as the Band prepare for a prosperous program of events over the summer

With a wealth of experience, Chris is a major boost to the band's ongoing development

The management committee recently took the decision to replace Brian Keachie as Musical Director. An announcement on his replacement will be made shortly

Latest player changes at Barrhead

Barrhead recently welcomed several new players to the band, boosting their preperations for the forthcoming Scottish Championships

Douglas Brown joins the band's front row on 4th Solo Cornet, John Anderson on 3rd Cornet, Andy Clark takes up the Bass Trombone seat and Murray White comes in on Bb Bass

In addition Sarah Crangle moves from 2nd Cornet to once again take up the Flugel Horn position, whilst Brian Robertson and John Farrell pair up together on 2nd Cornet

Farewell

Barrhead have in the past weeks said a fond farewell to Martyn Ramsay (Flugel Horn),
Ray Collins (Bass Trombone) and Donnie McMillan (Bb Bass)

Martyn has joined the Kirkintilloch Band while Ray and Donnie have both taken up positions with Newtongrange

Barrhead wish to thank them for their contribution and wish them and their respective new bands all the best at the forthcoming Scottish Championships

An announcement on replacements for these positions will be made shortly

Barrhead announced as Scottish Brass Band Association
 Band of the Year 2004

Capping off what has undoubtedly been one of the most successful 12 month periods in the history of Barrhead Burgh Band, the band have been declared as the  recipients of the 2004 SBBA 2nd Section Band of the Year Award

The award will be presented at the conclusion of the 2004 Scottish Open Contest being held in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on the 21st November

New addition to Barrhead Team

The band are pleased to announce that  Sheena Glass has joined on Eb Bass

Sheena who made her debut with the band at the recent Whitburn Contest brings a wealth of experience and is regarded as a a major boost to the band's ongoing development
22-09-04 Barrhead continue to climb the 4barsrest World Rankings!

After achieving 3rd place at the National Finals, Barrhead are now ranked 133 in the 4barsrest Top 200 World Ranking of Brass Bands

 A great achievement considering the band only entered the top 200 rankings in April of this year!

09-09-04 John Farrell - Latest Update

  Friends of the band and those that know 'Johnny' will be pleased to learn that he has now been discharged from hospital and is recuperating at home!

Burgh Band member John Farrell admitted into hospital


 Following an earlier heart attack only 2 weeks ago, 'Johnny' unfortunately     suffered another serious heart attack
on Thursday of this week and was admitted into the intensive care unit

  Our thoughts and prayers are with Johnny and the family at this time

30-05-04 Our band Chairman Mr Andy Smith is presented with the 'Award of Merit' by Mr Peter Fraser, Vice-President of the Scottish Brass Band Association. The award, given in recognition of Mr Smith's contribution to the brass band movement in the West of Scotland was presented at the conclusion of the West of Scotland Brass Band Association Contest held at the Grand Hall, Kilmarnock

03-05-04 Barrhead welcome percussionist Kirsty Henderson to the band. A student of music at Aberdeen University, Kirsty will make her debut with the band at the forthcoming West of Scotland Entertainment Contest

Further contest success as Barrhead  travel to Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline and are awarded 1st place in the 2nd section of the 2004 Carnegie Trust Contest. Our flugel horn player Martyn Ramsay is also awarded the medal for Best Instrumentalist
